Teaching Philosophy

Picture
One of my proudest moments as a teacher was finding, weeks after having given a lecture on personality, a picture taken by a student of one of my slides posted to the site "cheezburger.com". The slide had obviously stuck with the student, for whatever reason (I assume shared taste in video games) enough that he or she wanted to circulate it elsewhere.

I believe in Baba Dioum's famous quote: "In the end we will conserve only what we love, love only what we understand, and understand only what we are taught." Teaching, however, requires exciting the student. I hope to accomplish this by contagion (I think animal behavior and evolutionary biology are awesome, so I want to tell people why) and, more importantly, by connecting the principles of zoology to the interests of individual students. Throughout history the natural world has inspired developments in every conceivable field - from aeuronautics to zymurgy. There's something there for everyone.
